(BLUFFTON)(AP) - A northeastern Indiana man accused of fatally shooting a 4-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntary manslaughter.

The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reports 47-year-old Bruce Pond entered the plea in Wells Circuit Court in Bluffton on Friday. Pond told a judge he shot Jacob Michuda in the head while acting in "sudden heat."

The boy was fishing off a pier with his father July 22 when authorities say Pond fired two shots from a rifle toward the group. Authorities say Pond fired because a light they were using bothered him.

If a judge accepts the plea, additional charges of reckless homicide and murder will be dismissed. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Pond's total sentence would not exceed 40 years.
