Fire Damages Historical Buildings In Vincennes

Last updated on Monday, December 19, 2011

(VINCENNES)(AP) - A fire has damaged nearly half a block of historical buildings and businesses in the heart of downtown Vincennes.

The Old Gimbel Corner Antiques building on Main Street in the former Indiana capital caught fire around 9 p.m. Saturday and spread to other buildings.

The Vincennes Fire Department worked with several township fire departments from across the Wabash Valley to bring the fire under control after three hours.

Vincennes Assistant Fire Chief David Halter says several of the building likely will have to be demolished.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. An arson investigator arrived on the scene late Saturday.

Vincennes was the capital of the pre-statehood Indiana territory from 1800 to 1813.
