(INDIANAPOLIS) - The city of Indianapolis has deployed a fleet of propane-powered, hybrid and electric vehicles.

The city used a $318,300 federal grant to retrofit eight DPW trucks and 11 sheriff vans. They also bought more than two dozen ford fusion hybrids and got five electric vehicles. It's part of the Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program.

Indianapolis Sustainability Director John Hazlett says the new fleet is catalyst for "greening" the city's entire 2700 car fleet.

Officials say propane produces 24% less in carbon emissions. Officials say the improvements will result in a guaranteed energy savings of $23,287 a year.
