(ANDERSON) - Anderson Community Schools will close two schools to save money.

The decision comes as the district in a city that was once booming with auto factories struggles to match its spending with its income.

School Board President Ben Gale says north side and east side intermediate schools will close and one empty elementary school will reopen. He says it's been a delicate balancing act to convince parents there was no other choice.

The school district lost 1,200 students last year alone--that's 15-percent of its total student body.

The new plan groups together kindergarten through fifth, sixth to eighth graders... and puts freshman, sophomore, juniors and seniors together.

The school district is using just 65 percent of its facilities.
