(UNDATED) - The National Transportation Safety Board is calling for a nationwide ban on the use of cell phones and text messaging devices while driving.

State Senator Travis Holdman, who sponsored Indiana's distracted driving law, says he saw this recommendation from the NTSB coming.

However, Holdman says this kind of decision is one that states need to be making. Holdman says it'll be a few years before any national legislation could pass and this recommendation from the NTSB serves as a notice that actual legislation could be on its way.

Indiana's current law prohibits reading or sending a text message or email while driving. Violation of the law could result in a maximum fine of $500.
