(UNDATED) - Hoosiers with “In God We Trust” license plates will soon have a new design to choose from.
The Bureau of Motor Vehicles released new artwork Tuesday, which features the American flag, space for six large numbers or letters and the words "In God We Trust" near the bottom.
All standard and specialty plates in Indiana are being redesigned by the end of 2013 to remove the small, stacked letters on the left side in an effort to eliminate duplicate numbers across plates and improve readability for police.BMV Commissioner R. Scott Waddell said the design and printing method for the new plate will save taxpayers $1.5 million in production costs over the five-year life of the plate design.
The "In God We Trust" license plate, which was established by the Legislature in 2006, is an optional standard plate with no additional fee.
In 2010, 1,944,771 Hoosier opted for the plate, about 30 percent of all registrations.
The new design will be available for new or renewed vehicle registrations in 2012.
The BMV on Tuesday also revealed a one-of-a-kind license plate design for Indiana's only living recipient of the U. S. Medal of Honor, Army Sgt. Sammy Davis. He will receive the new plate with his 2012 registration renewal.
Indiana law requires that a new license plate be issued every five years.
