(IRELAND) - Two southern Indiana men who risked their lives to save two people in separate rescues that unfolded decades ago have finally been recognized for their heroics.

The Ireland Historical Society recently awarded plaques honoring 76-year-old Paul Schitter and 61-year-old Gary Sermersheim. Both men live in Ireland, a small Dubois County town about 45 miles northeast of Evansville.

In 1973, Sermersheim rescued 16-year-old Dave Jacob seconds before Jacob's car burst into flames after a crash.

Schitter was honored for rescuing 8-year-old Daniel Ring in 1987 from a flooded culvert in the town of Holland after he heard Ring's cries for help. Schitter and Ring remain close friends and Schitter says, "I hate to think what might have happened if he hadn't hollered at me."
