(UNDATED) (AP) - Officials say the new online system that Indiana is implementing to track pseudoephedrine purchases has already stopped thousands of illegal sales.
State legislators this year approved requiring all stores selling cold medicines containing the drug often used in making methamphetamine to join the system by Jan. 1.
System technology provider Appriss Inc. says about 55 percent of Indiana's estimated 12,000 pseudoephedrine retailers are already in the tracking network. In September the system blocked more than 8,000 grams of pseudoephedrine from being sold.
But some police officials still think the state needs to require prescriptions to buy the medications.
