(HOWARD COUNTY) - Two Howard County schools are planning to build wind turbines, with an eye toward reducing utility bills by millions of dollars.
The Northwestern School Corp. board recently voted to move forward with plans to construct a wind turbine on farmland owned by the corporation, and the Eastern Howard School Corp. board has started the process to construct one south of Greentown.
Both school corporations have been approved for tax-free renewable energy bonds. Northwestern Assistant Superintendent Harold Seamon says the project has been considered for years, but state legislation that cleared the way for schools to use the energy produced to power their campuses made the project worthwhile now.
The schools also will use data generated by the turbines in their curricula. According to officials at both schools, the turbines would mean about $7 million in energy cost savings over the life of a wind turbine, about 25 years.
