(INDIANAPOLIS) - Money from the sale of nearly 6,500 Indiana specialty license plates meant to support the state’s Native Americans commission is sitting unused since the panel hasn’t met in more than two years and has gone without new members being appointed since 2008.
The Legislature established the commission in 2003, but 5 of its seven Native American members resigned en masse in 2008 out of frustration with the state.
Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma member Sally Tuttle of Kokomo says she's tried without success to talk with the governor's office about refilling the positions.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Mitch Daniels says he has talked with the Native American community about making appointments, but whether that will happen remains unknown. About $160,000 from license plate sales is frozen.
