Indiana 46 Bridge Over Eel River Closed Because Of Crack

Last updated on Wednesday, November 2, 2011

(BOWLING GREEN)(AP) - The Indiana Department of Transportation has closed an Owen County bridge after an inspector discovered a crack in a metal plate.

The agency closed the Indiana 46 bridge over the Eel River out of safety concerns.

Tuesday after an inspector found the crack during a routine check. The bridge is about 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

It's not known when the bridge will reopen. Traffic is being detoured onto other highways.
It's the second such closure in Indiana in less than two months after inspections revealed cracks.

Gov. Mitch Daniels ordered the closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge carrying Interstate 64 traffic over the Ohio River near Louisville, Ky., after an inspector found a 2 1/2-inch-long crack in a steel support beam.
