(UNDATED) - The pace of home foreclosures in Indiana and the U.S. has slowed from a year ago, but some homeowners continue to struggle, with more falling behind on mortgage payments.
New assistance programs for struggling homeowners rolled out in October, including an Indiana program that provides temporary financial help with mortgage payments for people who are unemployed
President Obama also announced a change to the Home Affordable Refinance Program that would help people refinance to a lower interest rate if they owe more on their mortgage than the home's value.
The changes are aimed at helping to keep the foreclosure problem at bay, after numbers peaked in 2010 and as national unemployment remains at 9 percent.
RealtyTrac.com, which monitors foreclosure rates across the U.S., found that the number of foreclosure filings in the third quarter of 2011 fell 34 percent from a year ago.
