Babies Die While Sleeping With Parents

Last updated on Friday, November 18, 2011

(BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY) - Three babies have died in Bartholomew County in the last year and a half while sleeping with one or both parents.

Child advocate plan to bolster educational efforts to eliminate these preventable deaths. Allowing a baby to sleep in his parents' bed places the child in danger of suffocating - whether from a parent rolling over onto the baby, or from a blanket, a pillow or even a soft mattress.

According to the Indiana Department of Child Services, a baby's risk of dying is 40 times greater while sleeping in an adult bed than in a crib.
