Valley Firefighter Arrested After Stealing Equipment

Last updated on Monday, October 31, 2011

(TERRE HAUTE) - A Valley firefighter is in jail after trying to sell station equipment.
Joseph Williams of the Sugar Creek Fire Department was arrested Friday morning after police discovered he tried to sell three radios to a shop in Springfield, Illinois.

The Vigo County Sheriff's office says it was contacted by the store, after store personnel found property ID tags on the equipment.

Williams, who had been with the department since May, is charged with theft.
Officials say this is not something they're taking lightly.

"Some of our firefighters are pretty down. They can't believe it happened from a fellow brother, but we'll move on. They know it won't be tolerated. They're happy the the Sheriff's Department has apprehended him and his day in court will come," said Sugar Creek Fire Chief Darrick Scott.

Police are still investigating other items that have gone missing from Sugar Creek.
Williams is held in the Vigo County Jail on $10,000 bond. He'll be in court on today.
