(POSEY COUNTY) (WFIE) - Town hall meetings begin Thursday on the fate of the only school in New Harmony.

School officials are looking for ways to stay open despite funding cuts and declining enrollment. They're hoping residents will attend one of the meetings to hear the options, and then fill out a survey.

New Harmony School includes grades K-12, but has just 137 students. State funds were cut this year by a third. Now a consultant has come in to look at all the options.

Those options include a referendum to raise property taxes, consolidating with North Posey or Mount Vernon schools, pursuing a charter school status, or looking into private funding.

The consultant will go over the plusses and minuses of each option during the meetings. They are scheduled for Thurs. Oct. 27 and Thurs. Nov. 3 at 7:00 p.m.

The board will make a decision on how to move forward sometime in December.
