(UNDATED) - Some states are re-evaluating who qualifies for food stamp benefits.
Traditionally, most states determine eligibility based solely on income.
In an effort to weed out those taking advantage of the system, some states are asking applicants about their assets, like homes, cars, bonds and even lottery winnings.
Under new rules launched this month, Michigan residents with $5,000 dollars in liquid assets or a vehicle worth more than $15,000 won't qualify.
Arizona, Texas and Indiana are among states that ask about assets.
However, a number of states, including Nebraska and Louisiana, have recently lifted asset requirements, because of the growing number of unemployed residents.
