Marijuana Use Doubles Risk Of Crashing

Last updated on Tuesday, October 18, 2011

(UNDATED) - Drivers under the influence of marijuana double their risk of crashing. Researchers at Columbia University assessed nine studies looking at marijuana use and car accidents.

Overall, pot users were 2.7 times more likely to crash than non-users, and that risk was even greater when the driver had also been drinking alcohol.

Researchers say marijuana may interfere with a driver's reaction time and coordination.

Besides alcohol, marijuana is the most commonly detected drug in drivers.
