(FORTVILLE)(AP) - Another central Indiana school district is contemplating whether to end free school bus service for most students in a money-saving move.
A consultant for the Mount Vernon Community Schools in Hancock County says the district could save most of its $1.2 million transportation fund by canceling bus routes next year.
Tim Armstrong of Educational Services Co. says he expected more districts will consider ending bus service since it is among the costliest school services not required by state law.
District Superintendent Bill Riggs says bus service will continue through this school year.
The Franklin Township school district in suburban Indianapolis this summer turned its buses over to an outside agency that is charging monthly fees of at least $40 a child for bus service.
