(UNDATED) - Flea control products for pets have drawn heavy criticism lately.
Pet owners have reported skin burns, seizures and even death in their pets after using certain flea control products.
Dr. James Speiser, founder of Indiana Veterinary Emergency Care, says most of the products causing these issues are coming from out of the country and are counterfeit.
Dr. Speiser says some flea control products do not have to be approved by the FDA like others such as Frontline or Advantage.
He says the counterfeit products are made to look like those main brands. Dr. Speiser says the best way to check for legitimate flea control products is to pay attention to the applicators.
He adds that pet owners must follow the instructions precisely as some of these problems can be the result of owner error.
