Woman Dies After Being Dragged By Car

Last updated on Tuesday, September 6, 2011

(BURNS HARBOR) - Police in Northwestern Indiana say a man drove over a woman who was trying to stop him in a bar’s parking lot and dragged her for more than a mile to her death.

Burns Harbor police say 45-year-old Sheri Jania was an off-duty bartender at the shift change tap when 49-year-old James Lohman of Portage came inside with a teenager and another adult Saturday.

The three left the bar, but Police Chief Jerry Price said Jania heard they were involved in a fight at a nearby home and tried to stop them for police by standing behind Lohman's car.

Price said Lohman drove over Jania and kept driving after she became dislodged.
Lohman is jailed on preliminary charges of reckless homicide and drunken driving.
