Survey: 8 in 10 Unemployed For More Than 6 Months

Last updated on Saturday, September 3, 2011

(UNDATED) - The national unemployment rate for August stayed even at 9.1 percent.

A recent Rutgers survey says that nearly 8 in 10 Americans have been unemployed for more than six months and half have been unemployed for more than two years.

Jess Buckley with That's Good HR, a staffing firm in Castleton, says they're seeing more frustrated clients because they're being told they're either overqualified or underqualified. "It's finding that happy medium of a position where you can get your foot in the door as well as it being challenging enough and the pay is what they're looking for as well so it's just after so many times of being told you're overqualified or you don't have enough experience, it just gets frustrating," Buckley says. Buckley also says it's a good idea for unemployed people to find volunteer work to keep their skills up. She says maintaining computer skills is a very important issue.

Buckley adds that her company has seen a rise in open HR positions because those positions are usually the first ones downsized in a company. She says now that things are slowly getting better, companies are needing more people for those positions.
