(West Lafayette)- A Purdue scientist is part of a NASA mission that has sent two satellites into space to find out what’s below the surface of the moon.
Jay Melosh, professor of earth and atmospheric sciences and physics at Purdue, says the system, known as the gravity recovery and interior laboratory or grail, consists of two satellites which are each about the size of a washing machine that will use the moon's gravitational field to examine what's underneath the surface.
The grail system was launched last Saturday and will take about four months to reach its destination.
