Professor: Good To Have Relics To Reflect On 9/11

Last updated on Thursday, September 8, 2011

(UNDATED) - Indiana is home to steel beams from the World Trade Center for a 9/11 memorial in downtown Indianapolis.

An Indiana University professor says it's good to have these kinds of relics to help us reflect and remember.

Professor Edward Linenthal says the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is an apt time to reflect on the relationship between objects, memory and meaning. He says, "to have these material relics from the world trade center, it's a way for people to kinda touch that site, the power of that event, without being in New York."

Linenthal is a member of the Federal Advisory Commission for the memorial to the passengers and crew of United Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville, PA. He will be at the site this weekend.
