(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Transportation Security Authority will enact new screening procedures at all airports including Indianapolis and Fort Wayne by the end of September.
One of the new rules will allow children under the age of 12 to keep their shoes on when going through the security checkpoints.
TSA spokesman Jim Fortenos says the new rule will reduce the need for patdowns on children, but they may still be required if an anomaly or unexplained problem can't be resolved another way.
Since children under 18 are not required to provide identification when flying, security officers will work with parents at the checkpoints to determine a child's age or the need for them to remove their shoes.
Other changes in the security protocol include allowing multiple passes through metal detectors or the advanced imaging technology machines and the use of more explosive trace detection to resolve alarms.
