Leaders Defending College Tuition Hikes

Last updated on Friday, September 9, 2011

(STATEHOUSE) - Leaders of Indiana’s seven state colleges and universities are defending their tuition hikes to legislators.

University presidents insist they take seriously the tuition guidelines set by Indiana's Commission On Higher Education , which recommended capping increases at three-and-a-half-percent.

But House Ways And Means Chairman Jeff Espich (R-Uniondale) complains several of them then turn around and ignore those guidelines.

Espich says he's concerned college could become unaffordable just as the state is urging more residents to get their degrees.
