Infamous South Bend Representative Dies

Last updated on Wednesday, September 7, 2011

(SOUTH BEND) - Former South Bend representative Tom Kromkowski has died. He was 69.

Kromkowski was an autoworker who represented part of South Bend for 13 terms, from 1980 to 2006. He was active on labor issues, and chaired the house elections committee for part of his tenure.

The veteran democrat may be best remembered not for a law he authored, but one he inspired. Kromkowski was recovering at home from open-heart surgery in 2004 when house leaders arranged a webcam hookup to get his needed 51st vote on a full-day kindergarten bill.

Democrats backed down after Republicans cried foul, and legislators explicitly banned remote voting three years later.
