Columbus Sheriff Deputy Kills Person Lying In Roadway

Last updated on Friday, September 2, 2011

(COLUMBUS) - A Columbus man died after police said he jumped from the vehicle he was riding in and was struck by a Bartholomew County sheriff’s deputy.

Police say Jeremy Daniels was lying on U.S. 31 when the deputy hit him. Columbus Police Chief Deputy Matt Myers says it is not known whether Daniels was conscious when the deputy struck him or how injured he was from jumping from the vehicle.

Police earlier responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a Taylorsville gas station. Daniels and his ex-wife, Megan Daniels were found arguing but were allowed to leave together. The deputy was southbound on U.S. 31 when he ran over something in the road and turned around to investigate. He found Jeremy Daniels lying on the highway.

Myers said Megan Daniels returned to the area and told police that she and her ex-husband got into an argument and he jumped out of the vehicle.
