(INDIANAPOLIS) - Two giant steel beams hauled to Indiana from ground zero stand erect next to fire station 13 just off the canal in downtown Indianapolis.
The 911 Memorial was dedicated Sunday afternoon, just as the sun broke through the clouds in the wake of a light rainfall.
The crowd that filled Ohio Street broke into a cheer as the veil was lifted from a bronze American bald eagle atop the taller of the two beams, looking back towards New York City.
A flyover by an Army helicopter punctuated the moment. The memorial was the brainchild of Indianapolis firefighter Greg Hess, then a member of Indiana's urban search and rescue team, task force one.
The group made a 16-hour drive to New York City on September 12, 2001. Donations are still being taken to build a trust fund that will be used for maintenance of the memorial. You can give at project911indianapolis.org.
