(MARION) - A new study shows that workplace incivility is on the rise.

The study, authored by Jeannie Trudel with Indiana Wesleyan University-Marion says that incivility, which is defined as rude behaviors where the intent to harm is vague, has been on an upward trend.

86 percent of the respondents of about 280 or so participants in the study have indicated that they've experienced incivility in the past year.

Trudel says incivility can be anything from excluding people from conversations to leaving the coffee pot empty after taking the last cup. She says over time, incivility can lead to low morale in the workplace.

The cumulative effect of incivility, according to Trudel, can even lead people to start looking for a new job.
