(WEST LAFAYETTE) - As college classes get underway, a Purdue University professor is encouraging college students to step away from Facebook friends back home and work to make new “real” friends.
Communications Professor Glenn Sparks says research shows social acceptance on campus is directly related to a students overall academic success and are longer-lasting relationships than those made in high school.
However, sparks says the rising dependence on social media like Facebook, Twitter, and texting can prohibit students from making friends in their immediate environment.
The research also indicates those college relationships have longer staying power than high school ties. Sparks suggests college students limit their social media time with friends from back home to periods when they are alone and make a conscious effort to make new friends with the people in their immediate surroundings.
