Federal Agencies Required To Make Policy Changes In Social Media Use

Last updated on Tuesday, August 2, 2011

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Government Accountability Office has told federal agencies that they must put policies in place regarding the use of social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

Terry Dawson with the law firm Barnes & Thornburg in Indianapolis says the concerns with federal agencies using social media is the accidental dissemination of information such as internal workings of the department or something that might deal with security.

The GAO says seven federal agencies have been identified and documented as security risks with regard to posts on social networking sites.

However, they will not say which agencies they are talking about.

Dawson says if someone's personal information, such as a social security number, is accidentally posted to the web, that person could have legal recourse against the agency.
