Last updated on Wednesday, August 3, 2011

(LEBANON, IN) - Two elderly women are dead and another seriously injured after a train collided with their vehicle Tuesday afternoon in Hendricks County.

Lt. Jim Yetter with the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department says officers were called to the railroad crossing just north of US-136 and Boone County line road around 5:00 where they found an Eastbound CSX train that struck a northbound vehicle.

The driver, 80-year-old Alice Schooler and the front seat passenger, 72-year-old Patricia Manion, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The rear passenger, 81-year-old Joan Gochenour was flown to St. Vincent's Hospital with serious head trauma.

The train's conductor told officers he sounded his horn several times before the collision. Witnesses told police they also heard the horn sounding.

Video from the engine shows the car did not hesitate or stop at the crossing.

The railroad crossing did have signs stating the crossing was there but did not have a stop sign or stop arm.
