(INDIANAPOLIS) - A watchdog group known as Public Citizen is attempting to have stronger warnings placed on antacids because, they say, the drugs cause a dependency and physical problems.

Dr. Amy Peak, Director of Drug Information Services and Academic Advising of Pharmacy Practice at Butler University, says she's not so much worried about dependence on antacids, but rather serious physical risks that they're learning more about. She says her biggest concerns-- cardiovascular disorders, especially arrhythmias as well as osteoporosis and fractures associated with that.

Dr. Peak says Public Citizen is claiming that when someone stops using antacids, more acid tends to build up in the body which creates a dependence on the antacids. She says if people have those feelings after stopping use of antacids, they should wait a few days for the feeling to pass.

However, Dr. Peak says there should be concern with those physical risks from long-term use of antacids, both prescription and over-the-counter.
