(INDIANAPOLIS) - The American Legion looking to bring home the remains of naval heroes who died in Libya over 200 years ago.

Marty Callaghan with the Indianapolis-based American Legion says the 13-man crew, members of the U.S. Navy, were killed on September 4th, 1804 as they took a ship into Tripoli harbor packed with explosives.

Callaghan says they are asking the government to work with whomever will be in charge of the new regime in Libya to arrange for the remains to be brought back to America. Callaghan says the U.S. Navy feels like the remains don't need to be brought back and he's hoping the Navy reconsiders its position.

Some spots at Arlington National Cemetery have already been reserved.
