Tough Jobs Require Worker Safety In Extreme Heat

Last updated on Friday, July 22, 2011

(UNDATED) - There are lots of jobs that are hot and strenuous under normal weather conditions, so extra precautions are taken to ensure worker safety in extreme heat.

Indianapolis Fire Captain Rita Burris says firefighters rotate more personnel, take more frequent and longer breaks, and take advantage of lots of water and Gatorade.

Bill Estes Chevrolet Shop Foreman John Hamilton says car mechanics face pretty miserable conditions as well.

Several large fans are used to keep the air circulating and workers take multiple breaks to stay hydrated.

Groundskeepers are another group that can't get away from the heat and humidity.

Victory Field Head Groundskeeper Joey Stevens says his crews take advantage of climate controlled clothing, and like everyone else, drink lots of water.
