(UNDATED) - There is a new mobile alert system to alert residents in four northern Indiana counties when beaches are closed because of E. Coli contamination.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management's Amber Finkelstein says Indiana Beaches Alert will let people know when water is unhealthy for swimming.

It will monitor beach conditions at public and private beaches in Lake, Porter, Laporte and Kosciusko counties.

IDEM says the Indiana Beaches Alert Mobile website allows visitors to obtain real-time information throughout the summer season.

It's online at www.in.gov/idem/5389.html.

The new service supplements the existing online beachguard system, which compiles water quality data from mid-May through mid-September.
