(UNDATED) - If you have noticed big banners outside local drug stores advertising a vaccine shot for the shingles, you’re not alone.
Even though we are hearing about cases of shingles going around, we cannot tell you if there is an increase in the number of cases in Indiana.
Tom duszynski with the Indiana Department of Health says they do not track shingles because you cannot spread shingles from one person to another.
Shingles is caused from the same virus that gives us chicken pox.
While shingles is not contagious, a person with an active case can spread the virus to someone who never had chicken pox, creating a big risk the person will end up with a case of chicken pox.
Duszynski says the vaccination advertised the drug stores are a good idea, but it is only approved for patients who are 60 and older.
