Missing Toddler Found In Whitewater River

Last updated on Monday, June 6, 2011

(NEW TRENTON, IN) - The Department of Natural Resources confirms a volunteer searching for a toddler who fell into the Whitewater River in Southeastern Indiana Wednesday located his body.

The DNR's William Browne says the 17-month-old Mitchell O'Banion was located about two miles downstream from where his parents' canoe tipped over on Wednesday.

The volunteer first spotted the boy's shoe around 3:30PM Saturday in the river near the town of New Trenton.

Previous recovery efforts had been hampered by water levels and debris.

Police do not believe the boy's parents, Carmen Sickmeier and Lawrence O'Banion II, of Florence, KY., were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.
