(UNDATED) - An Indianapolis girl has advanced to the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

13 year-old Gina Solomito is the only Indiana student to make it to the semifinal round out of 12 Hoosier kids who entered the contest.

Solomito is a home-schooled 7th grader, sponsored by IUPUI.

She has participated in two previous national spelling bees in 2008 and 2010.

The National Spelling Bee began in 1925 and since then, only three winners have come from Indiana.

Betty Robinson of South Bend won in 1928, David Scott Pilarski Tidmarsh of South Bend won in 2004 and Sameer Mishra of Lafayette won in 2008.

The semifinals of the spelling bee will begin Thursday at 10:00AM with the finals at 8:30PM. Both can be seen on ESPN.
