Last updated on Wednesday, June 1, 2011

(UNDATED) - Insiders say Indiana’s restaurant industry is on the upswing following a couple of tough recession years.

The Indiana Restaurant Association President John Livengood says restaurants are the first to feel oncoming recessions and the first to see recovery.

He says national surveys are also showing that the restaurant industry in on the upturn across the board.

The industry took a downturn back in October 2008 even before the recession hit.

During that period, Livengood says the industry lost roughly 200,000 jobs nationwide. Currently, Livengood says the industry has begun adding back jobs.

In metro Indianapolis, Livengood says the improved financial status of the Capital Improvement Board is also good news for local establishments.

He says income from the hotel and restaurant taxes has increased.

Livengood says increased consumer confidence is one of the main reasons for the restaurant comeback.

He says people are beginning to feel better about the economy and jobs and want to eat out more.
