Indiana Man To Attend World Transplant Games After Receiving New Heart

Last updated on Thursday, June 2, 2011

(UNDATED) - Two years after receiving a new heart, a Fishers man is headed to Sweden to participate in the World Transplant Games.

67-year-old Bruce Gilham is the only Hoosier participating in competition held every two years to demonstrate the benefits of successful organ transplants and to raise awareness for organ donation.

Gilham received his transplantation in February of 2009 at the St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana and credits the surgery with allowing him to enjoy life again with his wife of 40 years.

He will be competing in two events: the javelin throw and golf.

To prepare for the javelin portion, he has been working with an individual coach and personal trainer to build skill and strength for the sport.

The games are taking place from June 17th through 24th.
