(UNDATED) - Half of all Indiana driver’s licenses will expire next year, and the BMV is seeking help in coping with all the renewals.
Indiana juggled expiration dates to meet deadlines under the new federal Real I.D. law requiring more secure licenses.
The government has since extended those deadlines, but Indiana remains on track to be in full compliance by the original deadline of January 1st, 2014.
That means renewals will multiply eightfold next year.
The BMV may add staff, but it's urging Hoosiers to take advantage of a two-year-old law letting you renew your license online.
70% of Hoosiers now renew their plates online, but few have taken advantage of that option for their licenses.
The law still requires drivers over 70 and some others to renew at a branch.
The online option can't be used twice in a row. Commissioner Scott Waddell says you can renew your license up to a year before its expiration date.
The bureau will be sending out postcards inviting drivers to do exactly that.
The BMV will ask legislators to tweak the next round of expiration dates, so it doesn't face the same onslaught in 2018.
