Firefighter Dies During Roof Collapse

Last updated on Thursday, June 16, 2011

(MUNCIE, IN) - A Muncie firefighter has died fighting a fire that collapsed the roof of a church on the city’s south side.

A witness says he saw three firefighters climb onto the roof of the tabernacle of praise Baptist Church and began chopping holes in it.

When the roof collapsed, he only saw two firefighters come down. State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson says officials from his office and the department of alcohol, tobacco and firearms are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

He says investigators aren't ruling anything out including the possibility of arson.

Senior Pastor John Tuyner says no one was inside the church when the fire broke out.

He says they will rebuild but right now, they're thoughts and prayers are with the family of the fallen firefighter.
