(MUNCIE) - After at least ten tornadoes hit Indiana on Wednesday, a Ball State professor weighs in on the possibility of “tornado-proof” homes.
Professor James Underwood of the Ball State College of Architecture and Planning says building a tornado-proof home probably won't happen. Underwood says an average tornado in Indiana puts twice the load on a building that it is designed to take and that virtually no building would be able to survive that.
He says building "subscrapers" or underground buildings could be possible but he's not sure if it will happen. If it does, he says there will be other problems to deal with such as external power, water issues and daylight for buildings such as hospitals.
