(FISHERS, IN) - The Hamilton Southeastern School District is asking students and their parents to use emerging technology to alert administrators to suspicious or dangerous behavior.
The Text-A-Tip program was unveiled Tuesday as a way for them to alert an administrator or school resource officer without revealing their identities.
Marcia Irvin's son is a sophomore at Hamilton Southeastern High School.
She believes the program taps into students' primary mode of communication and reaches them in their comfort zone.
When HSE students text a tip to 847-847, or tip-tip, school resource officers have the ability to respond to them.
The tipster remains anonymous unless the information involves a crime.
HSE Student Services Director Michael Beresford notes the system is only monitored during normal school hours, so students should still dial 911 for emergencies.
The program is being funded for about two years by a grant from Duke Energy Foundation.
Once the contract expires, the school will evaluate Text-A-Tip's success or failure and decide whether to renew the contract with Salt Lake City, Utah-based school tip line.
