National Guard Filling Sandbags Along Ohio River

Last updated on Monday, May 2, 2011

(UNDATED) - The Indiana National Guard is filling sandbags along the Ohio River to help residents protect their properties from the flood waters.

Once filled, each sandbag weighs around 50 pounds.

Sergeant Jeff Lowry says the work is hard but the guard members have their work method down to a science.

The soldiers have filled more than 73,000 sandbags to make floodwalls.

Lowry says the guard is working under the direction of the Department of Homeland Security and will continue their work until they are told to stop.
