Senate Democrats Walk Out Of Statehouse In Protest Of Anti-Bolting Measure

Last updated on Thursday, April 21, 2011

(STATEHOUSE) - Senate Democrats walked out of the statehouse Wednesday in protest of an anti-bolting measure that was introduced as an amendment to the budget bill.

The amendment would allow $1,000 in fines per day for legislators who walk out for three or more days in an attempt to prevent a quorum.

The new rule would not apply to any legislator who is excused by the leader of their chamber or has a verified illness or injury.

The Democrats were angry because the measure was slipped into the bill without being heard in any committees.

They also said they did not have enough time to debate the measure.

The amendment was passed by a vote of 36-0.

It will now move to the house for further consideration.
