Indianapolis School To Cut 300 Jobs

Last updated on Wednesday, April 6, 2011

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Indianapolis Public Schools will cut 300 jobs as part of an effort to address declining enrollment and less state funding.

The district sent letters to employees about the layoffs during last week's spring break.

IPS Spokeswoman Kim Hooper says the budget cuts include trimming 271 teachers. 200 work at the elementary level, and 40 are middle or high school teachers.

21 work with special education students.

Most of the teachers have less than five years of experience.

IPS also sent layoff notices to 37 non-teaching staff members as it attempts to cut $21-million dollars from its budget.
