Hoosiers Killed At Work Memorialized Thursday

Last updated on Friday, April 29, 2011

(STATEHOUSE) - The 122 Hoosiers who were killed at work in 2010 were memorialized Thursday during a ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse.

The somber service, organized by the AFL-CIO, marked one of hundreds held around the country on workers memorial day to remember those who died and provide comfort to their families.

Lori Torres, Commissioner, Indiana Department of Labor, described the workers' diverse backgrounds.

Despite the deaths, Torres says workplace safety is improving.

In 1970, when OSHA was first established, there were 38 workplace deaths across the country each day.

In 2009, that number was 12 per day.
