(UNDATED) - Thousands of inmates released from Indiana prisons each year struggle to obtain identification from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Efforts are underway to make it easier to obtain this vital piece of information; documentation which could help reduce the chances that former inmates will commit more crimes by helping them land jobs.
David Burch, the Director of Prerelease Services at the Indiana Department of Correction, says in 2009, the BMV and the Department of Correction teamed up to send the BMV's Mobile License Branch to prisons across the state to give inmates nearing release a head start in getting an I.D. card.
Burch says they could process up to 5,000 state I.D. cards this year.
The DOC also is working with the Social Security Administration to start processing inmates for replacement social security cards within 120 days of their release.
